Chavez at it again....

Read this in the mornings football column at Yahoo Sports.
Diego Maradona yesterday took a pledge of allegiance to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, vowing to help the socialist win a referendum on allowing him to run for re-election.
Maradona wore a bright red T-shirt emblazoned with the 'Yes' slogan of Chavez's campaign and raised his left hand as the president held a 'swearing in' ceremony to recruit hundreds of supporters from sports associations.
El Diego can count himself among a select group of Chavez advisors that includes former London Mayor Ken Livingstone.
In an unrelated story, the Venezuelan capital Caracas has been overrun in recent times by drugs and traffic.
Scary and yet hilarious at the same time. Mainly because Red Ken did screw up the transport in London and we don't need to mention Maradona and his "coke" problem!
It seems that Chavez has realised that his domestic support for his push to rule until at least 2021 isn't as popular as he imagined. So he has recruited famous sportsmen to publicise his plight to help continue and "complete" his socialist revolution. Not content to leave in 2013, which would mean 10 years in power, Chavez believes he needs much longer.. and of course like his mentor Fidel Castro, he will want to stay for life by the time 2021 rolls around.

Chavez closed the rally by hugging Maradona on stage as scores of red balloons were released and fireworks exploded.
Scary.

Yep he is pretty shrewd populist strongman... And knows how to use theatrics...
What he needs is a minion or puppet to take over from him like Putin's Medvedev because as you point out his desire to entrench himself as the new Castro until 2021 probably not going to be popular...
He is going to have to be a bit more Machiavellian to maintain his power and vision...
If he has any sense he will find a puppet and entrench his ideology/vision into the system. Being a populist/cult of personality/father of the nation is bad strategy for an ideologue/nationalist/socialist or whatever he sees himself as...
