With MEAT to please you...

The girls at the Hand Mirror are outraged that the Huntsman Steakhouse in Dunedin has a "racy leaflet" advertising its steaks.. see poster below, click on it for full sized goodness :) Their post has attracted many foamy mouthed people all willing to put down students at Otago and the advertising practises of a private restaurant.

Now this is a good example of what is deemed offensive and what is a bit of humour by the main populace. Will we see the approx 58% (female population) of the students at Otago protest the restaurant? I doubt it. The only people who will protest are the womynists that occupy the womens room and of course the wee dears at THM who all are graduates from that room :) Little wonder that womens rooms around NZ are dreadfully undertilised and in my opinion should be used for commercial activities that will actually benefit all students instead of being a breeding ground for the types of rampant feminism that has no place in an ordinary society.

What they like to do is deliberately sneer at it, tell us that only badly educated people will like it and that it isn't humour (and those who say it is are obviously stupid). Little wonder the people who use these arguments are the same who wonder every day why that womens studies degree hasn't done them any favours in life.

This poster is a HARMLESS advertisement for a steak house. The girl on the poster isn't even that hot, but that's another debate! This poster is not getting students to force steak onto topless women nor is it encouraging girls to start stripping off in order to copy the posters.

The commenters turn their noses up at the "Dunedin student culture" as well, which is ironic considering many of those, who I know, engaged in drunken student hijinks at Otago themselves. A little rich perhaps? I know for one that whoever plays the "we are better than that" card needs to get a sense of humour and worry about more important things in the world.

Will there be an outrage if there was a poster with a naked muscle man showing off his sausages? Will there be controversy if they advisertised a topless girl with some cabbages? We all know that feminism walks hand in hand with that other disgusting habit, vegetarianism! :)

What do you think?

Well, "pitifully childish mentality" certainly stacks up. I dunno about laugh though, there's actually something inexpressably sad about it.

PM, it doesn't really bug me eh nor do I have an opinion about the design. This is just a leaflet for a meat restaurant - its bound to offend a few sensitive sorts. But in O week the rules are always being rewritten :)

I don't normally have anything much against tits in advertising, being a complete sucker for them myself. But this example is inexpressably sad for various reasons:

1. This "woman = slab of meat" stuff doesn't come across either as clever or funny, just ugly and stupid;

2. The model's expression shows she's well aware that this isn't her proudest moment; and

3. The appallingly bad greenish lighting suggests the Huntsman's steaks are cut from fresh human cadavers. Only someone completely deranged could imagine this would actually promote patronage of their establishment.

Just somebody playing with a freeware desktop publisher.

Nothing to see here.

Not much, anyway.

So Clint you are offended by stereotyping of Otago students by readers and writers at The Hand Mirror and you defend that by stereotyping those who frequent that blog? Irony much?

Interesting also that for the second time (possibly more, I don't know because I don't really frequent your blog much) you have chosen to criticise from afar and stay aloof from the comment section of the actual post at THM that upsets you so. Last time your excuse was that you'd get death threats. Got a new excuse yet?

And what Psycho Milt said.

I didn't stereotype the readers of your blog, but I love how you put in your little digs about how much better you and your blog is, it's not a competition.

So, care to answer why the students of Otago won't protest about this? Your cause is dead, the players in it are relics of a feminist era long gone.

Ahh so you liked what PM said, I agree - I too am a sucker for a nice set of tits.

Now run along.

And if Andrew Wicked is reading this as well... get a life old boy.

Surely Clint you aren't professing a lack of belief in the market when you proclaim blogging non-competitive? Not sure how exactly I trumpeted THM's superiority over this fine little organ.

I have no idea if the students of Otago will protest about this or not, but I can tell you feminism is alive and well. Or do you think the election result means the feminazis have gone forever?

And yes I can appreciate nice breasts, I just don't get over excited about them like some do.

I suppose I should commend you for being brave enough to link to us in your post, unlike last time when we were too scary. Small steps, small steps.

Ahh Julie, blogging isn't a competitive activity unless you are the one in the playground poking your tongue out and saying you're better than me.... a tad silly don't you think. BUT I must say, I am glad you consider this blog a fine organ... I think my co-bloggers would be glad to hear that.

I'm glad feminism is alive and well... but I do wonder how little you got out of it considering you had nine years and a really good run... and nothing seems to have changed.

Aha, well I am not scared of your blog, but you do havea fair share of quite nasty "associates" who have in the past threatened me. NRT tried to googlebomb me with lies in order to stop me getting work in NZ. Not a very charitable way to disagree with people you don't agree with.

I do enjoy our discussions!

Heh! I remember that....I dropped you in it with that suggestion that Maia needed to make friends with a black plastic accessory...sounds like Julie needs a loan of it.....

Zing! ;-)

The Hand Mirror are so inconsistent with the application of their feminist mantras I wonder why their blog doesn't explode (or whatever blogs do in situations like this).

They talk about women's empowerment, equality the right of women to make their own choices about sexuality, their bodies, their lives but that's all it is; talk!

They blast the choices this woman made to accept a modelling job to bare her breasts and write her off as a victim of oppression - assuming she has no brain or ability to make her own choices.

Elsewhere in their site they blast another woman's choice to cover her breast up with a t-shirt that contains a slogan alluding to the fact the woman shares her family's morals towards sexuality. They view this as oppression of her sexuality - can she not choose her own t-shirt and her own reasons as to why her breasts are not exposed?

When Otago Uni's student rag published unwanted comments about my breasts some of the very same feminists who were witness to this said.... NOTHING.

Funny. When a woman freely chooses what she does with her breasts but her reasons are "wrong" she is oppressed, cannot think for herself and is a pawn of male patriarchy. Yet when a woman has no choice about her breasts being the subject of attention, but the breasts in question belong to a woman with the wrong politics, no "oppression" apparently is present.

The reality is that feminists like those at the Hand Mirror rate their own politics higher than the women they talk about championing and they are more than happy to try to control what women do with their bodies or turn a blind eye to actual cases of harassment if it suits their political agenda.

As a disclaimer, I choose to not give my money to organisations that advertise like this one and I don't think women should choose to accept modelling jobs like this but then I have never tried to make the claim that all choices women make are morally benign.

Nice one Mads, I agree. They do not consider choice in what they say and yet advocate for womens freedoms. Quite an eclectic grouping of left and hard left authoritarians in there.

At least one of them would have full knowledge of the harrassment you got from Critic...but of course as you're not a man wary leftwinger they would not stand up for you.

At least one of them had an office below Critic's at the time it was happening. This office was provided so that this person could provide advocacy services. This person was then, as she is now, noted for her outspoken feminism.

Maybe she had laryngitus.

I know which one you mean, and I'd have thought she'd be reasonable...well she wasn't too bad when I was at Uni. But she was probably blinded by her ideology....not very feminist if you ask me!
