Chavez - Following the script nicely!

As mentioned on my blog many many times. I'm hardly a fan of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Throughout the past few years he has managed to do everything to turn a free Venezuela into a hardline Socialist dictatorship. It would be safe to say he has followed the script nicely; using the oil wealth to buy votes and support, pushed through laws allowing him to run for President for an unlimited time; shut down private TV and newspaper networks, authorising crack downs on opponents, attacking his Capitalist enemies while cuddling up to his comrades (Castro etc), telling the population that he has been the target of assassination plots during election time, secretly funding organisations to hurt his enemies (FARC in Columbia), heavy rhetoric against regional powers who oppose his leadership - and accusing them of being American stooges (Columbia)... etc etc... not to mention the BILLIONS he has spent rearming his militia and upgrading his military with Russian weaponry.

It was all doomed from the start and yet he is not doing anything differently.

Now he is beginning to flex his muscles. His domestic support is waning and he needs to find a distraction... so he has told troops and citizens to prepare for war with Columbia. The reason? Washington wishes to have more access to fighting the war on drugs within Columbian borders and Chavez has lept on this as an attack on his authority in the region. Chavez already helps fund the FARC terrorists - and enjoys their support and endorsements. If the US attack and kill more of them, he will lose his influence in Columbia which has politically turned their backs on Chavez's socialist agenda.

As discontent grows over water rationing and power cuts - Chavez believes that war against Columbia will solve his problems and cement his legacy as the Socialist saviour of South America. Realistically it is going to lead to more long term suffering for both countries and political instability for Columbia. If the Chavez revolution cannot even provide water for the poorer classes who were manipulated into voting for him - then how do we expect him to do anything encouraging for his country?

Quoted in the Economist. Sounds like he has been talking to Comrade Clark!

"Some people sing in the shower, stay in the shower for half an hour," he fumed in a televised cabinet meeting, according to the Daily Mail.

He then revealed that he was taking the lead in the fight against wasted energy.

"No, kids... Three minutes is more than enough. I've counted, three minutes, and I do not stink."

Warming to his subject, he continued: "If you're going to lie back in the bath with the soap and you turn on the Jacuzzi, imagine that - what kind of Communism is that?"
