Don't hold your breath New Zealand!
This will no doubt get Labour and Green MPs into quite a state. How dare the Government start to watch its spending? What on earth would Labour politicians do if they didn't have a slush fund to bribe taxpayers with at election time? Why should top wage earners have to pay an equal amount of tax than everybody else?? I can imagine this will not go down too well at all with the left - after all, high taxes and we know best Government is the only way they can have power over the citizens - letting people make their own choices is the first step away from socialism and statism.
National too will be nervous from this report. Key has built up an image which doesn't stray too far from what Labour has done - and is immensely popular for doing it. Goff is on 5% popularity - so John doesn't really have to do anything.
Of course Brash is right, which is why he was never truely accepted by his Party. A crying shame considering he saved many of their political lives and built Nationals support base up again to help Key get to where he is. The little case of $800,000 overspending by Labour (of taxpayers money) also played a part in that.
What is unfair about making everybody pay a flat amount of tax? 20% of 1 Million is still more than 20% of $30,000. Any idiot can see that it removes the complexity of the system and will help fight tax avoidance. I don't think in my lifetime NZ will wake up to the sheer brilliance of flat tax - so expect us to languish behind more progressive countries like Czech Rep, Russia, Slovakia and Latvia, all who have citizens very grateful that they keep the proceeds of their hard work away from the politicians.

Tax cuts proposed
Also see Sir Roger Douglas's take on cutting the gap. It's even better and pledges to cut Govt expenditure and the growth of Govt. After all, when they invented the concept of Govt there was no way they intended it to be like it is today.
